What is a broadband connection?
A broadband connection is a high-speed, uninterrupted internet connection.
What is the advantage of a broadband internet connection?
Broadband service enables the delivery of services that are not available with lower-speed connections. Examples of such services include high-definition online video, internet television, and online games.
Who will benefit from this program?
This program will be beneficial for both the government and business sectors, as well as the Georgian public. As a result of this successful cooperation between the government and the private sector, Georgia’s regions will have high-speed Internet that will increase the involvement of citizens in the country’s social-economic life. The project will also promote entrepreneurship, develop a competitive market environment, and promote private investment in the telecommunications field.
Who will implement this program to develop fiber-optic broadband infrastructure in Georgia?
The program is being implemented by the non-entrepreneurial, non-profit legal entity Open Net, which is supported financially by the International Charitable Cartu Foundation and established through Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA) of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
Will implementing this state program conflict with private sector interests?
The state program was prepared in collaboration with the private sector, which identified their concerns relating to the project. This program is designed not to interfere with or impede the interests of private sector entities. On the contrary, this project will help private sector entities develop their own networks and make investments on a larger scale. Private sector entities are encouraged to visit the relevant settlements to assess investment potential. Within the framework of the State Program, commercial operators were given the opportunity to construct broadband infrastructure in any given settlement area, by using the co-financing tool provided to them by the three-way contract offered by “Open Net”. In addition, the construction of infrastructure by “Open Net” will be performed based on the data provided by the commercial operators. Namely it will only take place in the settlement areas where no private operator has fiber-optic network, nor plans to build one during the next three Years.
What will be the monthly cost of an internet subscription?
Open Net is tasked only with building internet infrastructure. The cost of an internet subscription will be set by a local internet provider.
Which company will construct the broadband fiber-optic infrastructure?
Companies responsible for the design and construction works will be revealed during the State Procurement process announced by “Open Net”.
